* Toxicity of Carbon Monoxide:

Reference: "Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials"

N.I. Sax, 4th Edition, Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, 1975, p520.

"Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas.

A concentration of 400 to 500 ppm in air can be inhaled without appreciable effect for 1 hour.

Exposure to a concentration of 600 to 700 ppm for a similar period will cause barely appreciable effects.

But, 1000 to 1200 ppm is dangerous, and 4000+ ppm is fatal in less than one hour".

In most fires, the air has sufficient oxygen to support life, i.e. above 18% oxygen.

The air is unbreatheable due to smoke particles and toxic gases, most of which

can be removed by activated carbon absorbent and efficient particle filters.

It is unlikely that the level of carbon monoxide present in "otherwise breatheable air"

would be sufficient to be life-threatening within a 15 to 20 minute exposure period.
